I miss the trollies in Seattle. When I lived up on Queen Ann the trolly went up the hill by all the old Victorian Houses on the hill which are long gone. When it snowed you walked up the staircase to get to the top.

There's a restaurant in Austin just a few blocks from thee State Capitol called the Texas Chili Parlor. It is notorious for having political graffiti often written by the hard working aids to congress critters.
After reading the first few sentences of this post, I knew exactly what coffee shop you were referring to! Sadly, I don't live in Portland, but visit at least a few times a year. I've spent many hours on a weekday morning sitting in Case Study, reading and enjoying the ambiance. It's one of my favorite coffee shops in the city. How lucky you get to visit whenever the mood strikes!
So there’s this thing called “coffeeneuring” which is the coffee version of Randoneuring (a type of long distance bicycle event with a set time limit and checkpoints) Every year in the fall there’s a Coffeeneuring Challenge; ride your bike at least 2 miles, drink coffee (or similar drink), 7 times in 7 weeks to at least 6 different locations.
Since Case Study is the closest (and best) coffee shop to the Portland Art Museum, which is also the location of the Portland Book Festival, which always happens in early November in the midst of the Coffeeneuring Challenge, Case Study is perennially one of my Challenge stops.
It was fun guessing which cafe you were talking about as I read the details. My guess was Coffeehouse Five on NE Killingsworth until you mentioned it was downtown

As someone who's always been fascinated by random writing and pictures on bathroom stalls, the part about people writing shit around the bathroom warmed my heart a bit. Lol

I remember a doughnut shop near a university with a similar graffiti wall.
